Psychological Myth

You will be asked to examine a psychological myth and decide whether the myth is ‘Busted,’ ‘Plausible’ or ‘Supported.’ You will choose one of the myths below and find two research articles that examine this myth. The beginning of your paper should describe the myth, defining any terms that need to be defined. Then, you should summarize the two articles relating to myth in the body of your research, specifically mentioning any previous work the article discusses, the method used by the researcher, the results of the study, and any implications. Then, you should conclude by decided whether the myth is busted, plausible, or supported by this research, and what evidence you found in the articles to support this decision. Examples: • “Opposites attract” (we are more attracted to people different from ourselves in romantic relationships) • People are able to tell if others are lying to them by facial expressions and body language • Absence makes the heart grow fonder (spending time away from someone makes you like them more) • Expressing anger is necessary to reduce the anger • People with schizophrenia have multiple personalities. • Only depressed people commit suicide. • People tend to behave oddly during a full moon. • Most people with mental disorders are violent. • Low self-esteem is a major cause of psychological problems • Our handwriting reveals information about our personality • There is a new epidemic of autism • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) ‘shock therapy’ is a brutal and unnecessary treatment for mental disorders. • Bipolar depression and creativity are linked
